Shauna Marshall, Manager, and Yasin Ahmed, Specialist, Marketing and Digital Communications, provided an overview and demonstration of the new Region of Peel accessibility intranet portal. Accessibility Peel was launched on February 15, 2022 to increase staff engagement and awareness of accessibility and deliver concise education resources and practical tools for employees. An update was provided on various actions the Region is undertaking to elevate accessibility for staff and residents, including the establishment of an AODA internal cross-functional group to generate synergy across the Region, increase awareness of accessibility and accessibility measures, and encourage employees to consider accessibility in their daily work life.  The portal provides access to corporate accessibility training and policies; PDF decision map; AAC highlights, and more. In addition, plans are underway to release content throughout the year to help guide the organization towards actions needed to bring accessibility to the forefront.

In response to questions raised by Committee member Chafe regarding contrast colours, the use of an accessibility checker on documents, and links within documents, Shauna Marshal confirmed that a standardized colour palette is used and that documents follow accessibility guidelines. The Region of Peel strives to meet Triple-A compliance in regards to AODA requirements.

In response to an inquiry raised by Committee member Karim Shauna Marshall confirmed that the portal will be monitored through measurement techniques such as who is accessing the page, where they are accessing it from, and what components of the page are being utilized.

  • RECOMMENDATION AAC-2-2022:

That staff be directed to report back to a future Region of Peel Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting on the accessibility requirements under the Planning Act.

In response to a question from Councillor Sinclair regarding the role of the AAC as an approval authority in the site plan review process, Veronica Montesdeoca, Accessibility Planning Specialist, clarified that the role of the Committee is to provide advice on site plans for Region-owned facilities that it chooses to review.

In response to questions from Committee member Chafe regarding a site plan review subcommittee, Juliet Jackson, Director of Culture and Inclusion, advised that scheduling of meetings, achieving quorum and redundancy in the review of site plans posed significant challenges for the previous subcommittee. She noted that the volume of Regional  site plans is much lower than at the local municipalities.

Committee member Tymkow suggested that an updated list of accessibility requirements be shared with developers and the Committee when conducting site-plan reviews.
