Councillor Innis, Committee Chair, called the Government Relations Committee meeting to order on March 2, 2022 at 11:01 a.m. in the Council Chambers, Regional Administrative Headquarters, 10 Peel Centre Drive. Members of the Committee and staff participated electronically.

Councillor Downey was absent due to other municipal business.

Councillor Santos was absent due to other municipal business.

  • RECOMMENDATION GRC-1-2022

    That Councillor Vicente be elected Vice-Chair of the Government Relations Committee for the remainder of the Council term or until a successor is appointed.

  • RECOMMENDATION GRC-2-2022

    That the agenda for the March 3, 2022 Government Relations Committee meeting, be approved.

Discussion led by Keith Medenblik, Manager, Strategic Public Policy and External Relations

Keith Medenblik, Manager, Strategic Public Policy and External Relations, provided an overview regarding: the federal and provincial landscapes; the federal and provincial pre-budget submissions; the Region’s immediate and long-term Council endorsed advocacy priorities and themes; the provincial election strategy and emerging trends; and, upcoming advocacy opportunities.

In response to questions from Councillor Palleschi regarding affordable housing, Adrian Smith, Chief Planner, stated that the Region of Peel is working with the development industry, as well as provincial and local municipal staff through the Housing Affordability Task Force. He noted that Peel staff will be reviewing the task force recommendations through a Region of Peel lens and will report back to the next Planning and Growth Management Committee with the results of that review.

  • RECOMMENDATION GRC-3-2022

    That the approach outlined in the report of the Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Corporate Services, listed on the March 3, 2022 Government Relations Committee agenda titled "2022 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Annual Conference", be endorsed.

  • RECOMMENDATION GRC-4-2022

    That the approach outlined in the report of the Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Corporate Services, listed on the March 3, 2022 Government Relations Committee agenda titled “Region of Peel’s 2022 Provincial Election Strategy”, be approved.
