Councillor Innis, Committee Chair, called the Government Relations Committee meeting to order on October 21, 2021 at 11:01 a.m., in the Council Chambers, Regional Administrative Headquarters, 10 Peel Centre Drive. Members of the Committee and staff participated electronically.

Councillor Crombie arrived at 11:10 a.m.

Regional Chair Iannicca arrived at 11:22 a.m.

  • RECOMMENDATION GRC-5-2021:

    That the agenda for the October 21, 2021 Government Relations Committee meeting, be approved.

Discussion led by Keith Medenblik, Manager, Strategic Public Policy and External Relations; and Indro Bhattacharyya, Advisor, Housing System Performance

Keith Medenblik, Manager, Strategic Public Policy and External Relations, provided an overview of the 2021 Federal Election Liberal Party of Canada platform priorities, the Provincial Speech from the Throne, COVID-19 response priorities, emerging trends, and the Region of Peel’s post Association of Municipalities of Ontario Annual Conference activities and future advocacy opportunities.

Aileen Baird, Director, Housing Services, provided an overview of the Region of Peel’s affordable housing funding challenges and advocacy opportunities through the Rapid Housing Initiative and Housing Master Plan.

In response to questions from Councillor Thompson, Aileen Baird confirmed that examples of Peel specific challenges regarding the Rapid Housing Initiative have been provided to the provincial government. Keith Medenblik stated that staff received direction from Regional Council regarding implementation of Administrative Monetary Penalty Systems and will look for opportunities to advocate at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association annual conference in 2022.

In response to a question from Councillor Ras with respect to the Region of Peel’s request for changes to the payment in lieu of taxes formula, Gary Kent, Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Corporate Services advised that staff are optimistic that an update will be available after the release of the fall economic statement.
